U.S department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers (VAMC)

In 2011 Wellons FEI Corp. was awarded contracts to supply wood fired boiler systems on 2 distinct U.S department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers (VAMC).

  • VAMC, Chillicothe OH, 1x600HP
  • Canandaigua NY, 2x300HP

One of the projects is a 600 HP stepped grate wood fired boiler for the Chillicothe VAMC site in Ohio State, the other project is for the Canandaigua VAMC site in New York State where 2 x 300 HP systems will be supplied and installed.  Scope of supply on both projects is for the fuel storage, fuel handling, combustion chamber, boiler, pollution control system, ESP, as well as the controls, instrumentation and start-up.  Both projects will have small scale steam turbines that will generate approximately 0.4 MW of electrical power.  The primary role of the biomass boiler systems will be to heat the buildings on the medical campus through a district heating infrastructure.  The VA will purchase biomass from sawmills in order to fuel the systems.  This will stimulate the local forestry economy and also considerably lower the VA’s carbon footprint.  Both systems are scheduled for start-up in 2012.
